Cape Tainaron separates the eastern Laconian Gulf from the Messenian Gulf in the west. It is said that it took its name from the mythical son of Zeus, Taenarus. At this region, a network of caves was believed to be the entrance to Hades, the gate to the Underworld. It has been an important place for thousands of years as a Nekromanteion operated there and the dead were believed to rise from the Underworld, in order to answer questions asked by the living ones! Ancient Spartans also built several temples there, dedicated to various gods. On the hill situated above the cave there are the remnants of an ancient temple which was dedicated to the sea god Poseidon.
The tour is offering a breath taking view to the Aegean Sea. Following the pathway from Kokkinogeia village you will see on your way some of the archaeological evidences of the ancient Greek temples. The path brings you to Cape Tainaron, with its beautiful lighthouse. From this spot you can admire the view of the open horizon and, when the atmosphere is clear, you can even see the shores of Africa.
